STORAGE AND HANDLING

The chemicals should be kept in special conditions so that to maintain the chemical properties but also prevent from injuries. It is best practice to minimize the quantities of hazardous chemicals on hand whenever possible. Minimization of stored chemicals is a key way to reduce the likelihood and severity of an incident involving said chemicals.

  • All chemicals must be stored in a safe, secure location.
  • Hazardous chemicals must be stored below eye level.
  • Do not store chemicals on the floor, window ledges, or balconies.
  • Keep containers closed unless you are dispensing a chemical or adding to the container.​
  • Store the chemicals properly.
  • Any balance of chemicals or unused chemicals must be discharged or kept airtight drums / container.
  • Keep similar chemicals in one location within the store.
  • Clearly label all storage and utility containers with distinct marks and keep them closed.
  • Follow chemical storage guidelines from manufacturer such as keeping chemicals in protected, vented, cool, dry place.
  • Follow correct procedures on storage, handling and disposal of chemical spillage.
  • Use clean dry utility drums/container to measure, blend or transfer chemicals.

DEVELOP AN INSPECTION PROGRAM FOR YOUR STORAGE AREA

  • Eliminate unnecessary chemicals.​
  • Correctly dispose of empty containers.​
  • Ensure all chemicals are clearly labelled.​
  • Ensure your register of hazardous chemicals is up to date.​
  • Ensure your storage area is clean and organised.​
  • Ensure incompatible chemicals are separated.​
